Tree Planting along the Chehalis River/ Discovery Trail/ Wastewater Treatment Plant

The 2017-18 School Year is the 2nd year of our NOAA sponsored “Climate Resiliency Fellows” Program.  Our aim is to “Create a dynamic community of informed teachers committed to involving their students in learning about and engaging in local climate change issues and climate resiliency projects.”  Many thanks to all of our hard working teachers and students!

The students started the day stopping at the Centralia Wastewater Treatment Plant.  They took a walk around the facilities and learned how the city’s water comes in and gets refurbished so it can go out to the river.  They saw how they are using the sludge to make fertilizer for the public. I visited the plant several years back and they were just starting this endeavor so it was neat for me to see how they are now really making a go of it.

After walking around the tanks and seeing just how the water comes into the plant and what takes place to the water.  We went into the lab where we saw the different “good bugs” that help clean the water. The students were very interested in this and seeing them up on the TV hooked to the microscope.

After saying thanks and goodbye to the plant, we went to plant trees.  They were first instructed what and how to do it by the Chehalis Land Trust people.  The students were eager to get started and to plant. They planted “plugs” and dogwood.   I do not know how many we planted but all of the students were working and planting.

In some of the Thank you letters, many students drew a picture of a tree or “plug” they planted and then a picture of their tree 30 years from now.

Comments:   “I hope me and my family can come and visit sometime”.
