As part of our NOAA Environmental Literacy Grant, we had our 3rd Summer Institute for Teachers June 25-27th. This year’s theme explored Climate Change in the Pacific NW: Sea Level Rise and Urban Flooding through a discussion panel of local experts, NOAA experts, and a variety of guest speakers including folks from NOAA, the City of Olympia, the City of Lacey, Washington Sea Grant, Barghuasen Consulting, The Evergreen State College, Nisqually Indian Tribe, Zero Waste Washington, and the Deschutes Estuary Restoration Team. Our field trip of the Deschutes watershed started way up at the new Deschutes Falls County Park and ended with a kayak tour of downtown Olympia! Other highlights included hands-on classroom labs and action projects to help students understand this big topic and take action in their community!
Actions can be big or small, and letting the world know what YOU are willing to do about climate change is a great way to start! To kick-off our “Do One Thing” social media campaign, we asked teachers at Institute to lead the way, and even some of our staff!

Big shout out to Christine Rayburn for keeping it real! Not only has she pledged to stop using disposable plastic straws, she’s taking her action up a notch by creating a “Stop Sucking Olympia!” campaign! Thanks, Christine!
